Mina Loy
25th January, 2007I first came upon her words through a book my sister Kricia had given me as a present. Honestly, I had trouble reading her dialect and the words she chose to use. It was actually difficult for me to get through the first few verses without having to refer to a dictionary! After research and alot of reading Loy, it was apparent that that book from my sister chose a very beautiful, yet difficult piece. It has been my favorite ever since.Difficulties in poetry, as well as life, make things more interesting. Maybe its overcoming a struggle and feeling empowered that makes me drawn to such things. For what its worth, read Mina Loy’s “Lunar Baedecker“.
It was Ezra Pound that was quoted as saying, “Isn’t there anyone in America except … Mina Loy who can write anything of interest in verse?” She was definately interesting in her poetry and in her life. She “hung around” cities of the world with likes of Marcel Duchamp, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce and Marianne Moore to name a few. It was Carolyn Burke in 1996 that published “Becoming Modern: The Life of Mina Loy (by Carolyn Burke, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1996) was released along with a new edition of her poems, The Lost Lunar Baedeker.” Possibly just a muse in the 1920′s, she is now in my top 10 for best poets.
